“653 TUBING” is written and underlined across the head of the sheet. No year appears on the sheet or its four attachment pages, so the order carries only its day, “Jan 31”; the delivery and deposit boxes are empty on the pro-forma. With the sheet is a four-page letter to Sid dated the same Jan 31, enclosing a £100 deposit cheque post-dated Feb 6th (“my pay day”), the balance to follow in cash. The letter confirms the 21" frame “as agreed last Saturday”, reasons out a 21½" top tube against the writer's Carlton (with a sketch), asks for gold outer cables and gold bar tape (“not white, not yellow”), toe straps too, queries the cable-guide runs, leaves the saddle to be decided between plastic and a Brooks Pro, and confirms 653 tubing, 73° parallel, 21", brazed-on fittings, mudguard clearance, 700c; a final page headed “gear ratios” asks for 50x40 rather than 52x42 — “I prefer to pedal rather than push”. It is signed Malcolm.
